Sustainability

Palo Alto has long been a leader in sustainability and climate action, and is committed to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 80% below 1990 levels by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. The Sustainability and Climate Action Plan (S/CAP) lays out the City's strategy for achieving these ambitious GHG emission reduction targets, while improving our natural environment, adapting to climate impacts, and increasing livability for Palo Alto residents.

In 2022, Palo Alto had already reduced emissions 47% from the 1990 baseline. We continue to implement the goals and key actions(PDF, 760KB) set forth in the S/CAP through a variety of programs and resources for Palo Alto residents and businesses.

About Us

The Office of Sustainability leads the City's sustainability initiatives, including the development and implementation of the Sustainability and Climate Action Plan (S/CAP). We coordinate across City departments to implement the S/CAP goals and key actions and work to engage the community on these programs and initiatives.

We also work with cities and organizations across the country to monitor and apply municipal sustainability priorities and strategies. This includes coordinating with other local jurisdictions, reporting on our greenhouse gas emissions and sustainability progress, and monitoring and applying for state, federal, and local funding opportunities.

If you have any questions about our office or any of our programs, or would like to collaborate, please reach out to sustainability@paloalto.gov.
